Listen to the message, emotion, and hopes of your partner better.

Improve your questions to get to understanding.

Slow down the conversation for improved empathy.

Understand as you listen

Use this tool to write out the message your partner shares, the emotions you perceive, the questions to explore your partner's perspective, and the plan you both come up with to move forward. Write as your partner speaks and reflect back periodically on what you understand. Slow down and try to understand your partner. If you get it, great. If you don't, ask questions and listen with curiosity.

As a marriage and family therapist, I love working with couples and families to help them better understand each other. Many times if we can slow down and reflect on what we hear conflicts diminish. I use this tool with my clients to improve listening skills and empathy.
